How can we help?

Unrealised vs. realised gains and losses

Your performance chart on Stake is designed to give you the most accurate picture of your investing performance. It calculates your total return in the period by adding both your unrealised gains/losses (what you currently hold) and your realised gains/losses (what you’ve already locked in by selling in the period).

Unrealised gains/losses (your current holdings)

  • What they are: These are the profits or losses you see on the investments that you still own. They reflect the current change in value from the moment you bought the investment until the current market price. Think of them as your ‘on-paper’ or ‘potential’ profits/losses.
  • Where to see them: In your Stake account, this value is typically what you see updating in your Holdings. It’s also why the ‘Total’ you see in your Holdings may be different to the ‘Max’ return seen in your performance chart.

Realised gains/losses (your completed trades)

  • What they are: These are the profits or losses that become final once you sell an investment. By selling, you’ve converted the changing market value into actual cash and locked in a gain or loss. So they’re your ‘locked-in’ or ‘final’ profits/losses from completed trades.

Example:

You buy 10 shares of a company for $10 each (total cost = $100).

Unrealised gain: The share price rises to $12. Your shares are now worth $120. You have an unrealised gain of $20.

Realised gain: You decide to sell all 10 shares at the $12 price, receiving $120. You have now realised a $20 gain.

Total return: Your overall profit on this investment is still $20.
