How can we help?

Performance calculation

We know it’s important to see how your investments are performing. The figures in your performance chart are designed to give you a helpful idea of your portfolio’s journey over time.

How we calculate your total return

Your performance chart provides a complete picture of your investment decisions by tracking your total return in each period (for Wall St and Aus separately). This sums up:

  • Unrealised gains/losses: The change in value of the investments you currently hold

  • Realised gains/losses: The profit or loss from the investments you have already sold

Please note: This performance only reflects the money you have invested. It does not include any cash sitting in your buying power (uninvested funds).

Calculating your percentage return

The percentage return you see is a simple calculation to show how much your investments have changed. You can think of this as the return on the capital you’ve invested during the period.

We use the following formula:

Dollar return = Current equity – Starting equity – Net investments
Percentage return = Dollar return ÷ (Starting equity + new investments) × 100

Example:

  Amount
Starting equity $1,000
Current equity $1,700
Net investments in period +$500

Dollar return $1,700 – $1,000 – $500 = +$200
Percentage return 200 ÷ (1,000 + 500) × 100 = +13.33%

Your performance chart is for general information only. It shouldn’t be the sole basis for your investment decisions. Values may vary over time, and your actual returns may differ from those shown. Past performance is not a reliable indicator of future performance.
