Macquarie Group Limited was founded in Sydney (as Hill Samuel Australia Limited). Today Macquarie is a provider of diversified financial services throughout Australia, the Americas, Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and the Asia Pacific.

How does Macquarie Group operate and earn revenue?

Macquarie operates and earns revenue in four business segments.

Macquarie Asset Management (MAM) 

MAM provides investment solutions to clients in Private Markets and Public Investments. The segment manages more than A$735.5b. 

MAM’s solutions are provided across a range of capabilities including infrastructure, green investments, agriculture and natural assets, real estate, private credit, insurance, asset finance, equities, fixed income and multi-asset solutions.

The MAM segment operates globally.

Banking and Financial Services (BFS) 

BFS comprises Macquarie’s retail banking and financial services businesses. For the full-year ended 31 March 2022, BFS deposits arrived at A$98b and funds on platform arrived at A$118.6b.

The BFS segment is made of three divisions: Personal Banking, Wealth Management and Business Banking.

  • Personal Banking provides retail banking products to clients with home loans, credit cards, transaction and savings accounts and vehicle finance.

  • Wealth Management provides clients with a wide range of wrap platform and cash management services, investment and superannuation products, financial advice, private banking and stockbroking. 

  • Business Banking provides a full range of deposit, lending and payment solutions, and vehicle financing. It also provides tailored services to business clients, ranging from sole practitioners to corporate professional firms.

Macquarie’s BFS segment operates only in Australia.

Commodities and Global Markets (CGM) 

The CGM segment offers capital and financing, risk management, market access, physical execution and logistics solutions to clients across the commodities, financial markets and asset finance sectors.

In FY2022, the CGM segment earned A$3.9b. The segment operates globally.

Macquarie Capital

The Macquarie Capital segment provides advisory and capital raising services globally. It invests alongside partners and clients, provides clients with expert advice and capital solutions across a range of sectors. 

Macquarie Capital is also focused on transport, digital and social infrastructure development and investment.

The bank’s net income for FY2018, FY2019, FY2020 and FY2021 arrived at A$2.5b, A$2.99b, A$2.73b and A$3.02b, respectively. 

In FY2022, Macquarie’s net income was up a whopping 56% from FY2021’s for an annual record of A$4.7b.

Is MQG a good investment?
