What I'm Trading - Jared

A surfer raised on the shores of Maroubra, Jared started investing to make use of his 'dead money'. Two years later he continues to grow his portfolio and learnt some valuable lessons along the way.

Occupation:  Operations
Age: 25
Location: Sydney, Australia
Hobbies: Surfing
Stake Portfolio Size: ~US$6,000

What was your first investment on Stake?

My first trade on Stake was in 2020 and was PENN (Penn National Gaming).

In one sentence, define your investing style.

My style is quite risky, I recognise that if I can’t take risks now I never will. At this stage of my life, 2000 lost is nothing compared to a potential 6x growth. I seek to find a company with a good board, a good product, and a reasonable belief that they’re getting better year on year. For example, I pick a company that will grow as the legalisation of sports betting throughout America continues to be accepted and legalised.

Why are you in the market?

I initially joined the ‘Market’ to make use of “dead money”, if my money was not being used in an attempt to grow my wealth I saw it almost as a wasted opportunity. I started trading strictly ASX for the majority of my trading life so far. Once a friend of mine introduced me to Stake and the US market I instantly recognised just how big it was and saw endless opportunities to grow and learn.

What’s in your portfolio on Stake right now?

I recently had a change in holdings and sold some positions. Currently, my holdings include Penn National (PENN), Scientific Games (SGMS), Tesla (TSLA), and my newest position in Pinterest (PINS).

How are your returns so far?

I’ve seen quite generous returns in a couple of my holdings with some above 65-70%.

Any investments that are not on Stake?

I still hold a couple of my ASX investments, some of which are going ok and one that I’m 90% sure will de-list quite soon which I’m happy with so I can forget about it and write it off. I have also adopted the new norm of trading Crypto, I am still trying to understand it but I’m under the impression that no one does.

What are you watching? Why?

Three stocks that I am currently watching in no order of significance are DraftKings (DKNG), Atlassian (TEAM) & ASML Holding NV (ASML). I see DKNG having nice short-mid term growth. TEAM is in a great position for consistent year-on-year growth & ASML is a leading semiconductor company and with the current shortage could see a big rise in revenue.

Do you have a trading or investing role model?

I don’t follow any specific “trading icons” but rather take one piece from everywhere and see what is gathered.

What’s a piece of advice you’d give a newbie?

Cut your losses and don’t get stuck holding positions that become dead money.

What’s one mistake you’ve made and what did you learn from it?

Doubting my research and missing good entry points for stocks, then to only commit at a much higher point. If you think it’s right then go for it.

If you were to buy a US stock or ETF right now, what would you buy? Why?

I would be tossing up between the three stocks that I mentioned earlier: ASML, TEAM & DKNG.

ICYMI: make your own decisions

This is not investment advice, just my opinion. It doesn’t reflect any opinions of Stake. I’m as fresh to this as the next person off the street. Do your own research and make your own decisions.
