FinFest Preshow: Anthony Doyle

As FinFest’s major partner, Stake has early access to the program’s amazing speakers. To share that access with you, we’ve selected five of them and picked their brains before the event.

In our next FinFest Preshow, we’ll hear from Anthony Doyle, Head of Investment Strategy at Firetrail. Anthony has over 19 years’ experience in global markets and is a highly regarded Economist and Investment Strategist. His role at Firetrail involves providing economic analysis that impacts portfolio decision making, currency risk management, portfolio analysis and insights.

What’s your day to day like in your role?

The best word to describe my role is dynamic. Markets are constantly evolving, always changing, and never static. It is important to filter through the noise and focus on what matters – whether that be for a company I am looking at or the outlook for the economy.

What was your very first investment?

I started my career at Macquarie when I was 21 and bought $1,000 worth of shares via the employee purchase scheme. Macquarie shares were trading around $10 back then.

What would you tell your younger investing self (other than stock picks)?

I would tell a young Anthony a cheesy old investing cliché: ‘time in the market beats timing the market’.

Can you sum up your personal investing style?

Barbell. A combination of high-risk (global equities) and low-risk (cash) assets.

Name a stock you’re watching right now and why.

Darling Ingredients. Darling is the largest collector in the U.S. of feedstocks such as used cooking oil and animal fats. It has the majority marketing share in the processing of animal fats, as well as relationships with over 200,000 customers for the collection of their used cooking oil. These feedstocks are used in the production of renewable diesel, which is a 100% replacement for fossil fuel derived diesel. The feedstocks have the benefit of being very low carbon intensity (up to 90% lower than fossil fuel) and are not disrupting the food chain.

What will you talk about at FinFest?

One of Steve Jobs’ favourite quotes is attributed to ice hockey legend Wayne Gretzky: ‘I skate to where the puck is going, not to where it has been’. The same is true of investing in companies. The big opportunities, the multi-baggers, lie in uncovering something that has been ignored by the market. But how do you do this? I’ll be looking at the best companies Australians have never heard of and highlight the stellar opportunities in the global equity market today.

Hear Anthony speak at 11:40 am. Plus at the Stake Main Stage, 1:00 pm and at the Magellan Greenhouse, 3:00 pm.

FinFest will be held at The Cutaway, Barangaroo, Sydney, on Saturday 15 October 2022. Tickets are selling fast.
