The Stakies

A celebration of the unique relationship between markets and the creative arts, The Stakie Awards recognises the public companies creating the most binge-worthy, addicting tv shows.

Creators of characters like the hilariously frustrating Ted Lasso to the instantly lovable Baby Yoda, companies like Apple, Netflix and Disney are proving to be more than just boring, blue-chip investments. Thousands of investors own the companies creating content that shapes our conversation and captures our attention.

We built a model that balances both the quality and quantity of original TV content with the commercial and fundamental performance of their creators. Netflix, AppleTV, Amazon Prime, Disney, HBO and Paramount+ are all being analysed.

Factors like the number of originals a house released, IMDb ratings, number of customers, stock performance and a fan vote are all incorporated into our proprietary algorithm to generate a stock price. Not only are we able to see the best performing production house, but understand their relative rank.

The Stakie goes to…Netflix

Netflix’s success is built on the back of the volume of Originals they produce. Headlined by masterpieces like Stranger Things, Tiger King and Queen’s Gambit, Netflix has published over 1,000 originals, far exceeding the competition.

A function of the huge quantity of shows that Netflix produces, it also leads the houses in Emmy nominations. The Crown, Bridgerton and Queen’s Gambit.

We looked at the average IMDb rating of each house’s 5 most popular shows; a good measure of whether a house is producing quality creative works or just work that attracts eyeballs. Interestingly, Netflix has the lowest average rating (7.76).

Finally, we can’t ignore the sheer number of people who use Netflix. Having crossed 200million subscribers, Netflix has the ability to influence culture globally.

Importantly, Netflix voted incredibly well in the fan vote. Almost half of all voters would pick Netflix if they could only watch one producer’s content.

Other award winners…

Highest rated on IMDb:

Queen’s Gambit. Beth Harmon’s character inspired a lockdown fueled fascination with chess. With an IMDb rating of 9.0, the show was a hit with audiences. Chess.com saw a 40% increase in daily games following the show’s release and online sales of wooden chess sets rose 125%.

Highest rated on IMDb:

We have a tie! Netflix’s The Crown and Disney’s Mandalorian both received 24 nominations each.

What else did we find?

  • Disney produces the best quality content according to IMDb. The average rating of their most popular shows exceeds all other houses (8.46).
  • Apple is the most popular of these houses amongst Kiwi traders. Of course, people invest in Apple for more than just its TV arm. If they were to own any of these stocks, Apple would be the one according to the fan vote.
  • HBO topped the charts for most Emmy nominations with 130. They produce incredible programs as evidenced by their 8.84 average IMDb rating. Ultimately they are let down by a poor stock performance from parent company AT&T and low subscriber figures to their streaming service.
  • Paramount+ is the lowest-ranked production house on this list. Their most popular shows are NCIS and Star Trek spinoffs which can’t compete with the blockbuster productions from the other houses.
