Stake Wall St offers additional trading sessions to give investors more opportunities to buy and sell U.S. shares. Here are some specifics about investing during pre-market and after hours on our platform.
Stake investors get an additional 5.5 hours of trading before and 4 hours after the usual market opening times, so they can make more timely investment decisions and participate in the excitement of the markets at more convenient hours.
On Stake, Extended Hours are comprised of pre-market and after hours:
Buying and selling shares during these additional sessions is very similar to the official U.S. market hours, but it’s not entirely the same process. There are some features that can enhance the experience for investors.
Placing orders
To get started with Extended Hours trading, place an order in any session and you’ll see the option to enable it to be executed in both regular and extended trading sessions. When Extended Hours is enabled, limit orders for all shares can be filled during either regular hours, pre-market or after hours, with the usual expiry options available.
Market orders, on the other hand, are only possible during Extended Hours for around 1,000 higher-volume stocks – and they will be cancelled if they don't execute immediately as a protection in moments of high volatility. So it’s worth keeping in mind that market orders might not always get filled.
Before enabling any given order to be carried through to Extended Hours, investors should keep in mind that, due to lower levels of trading activity, those sessions can be relatively volatile.
Prices on Stake update live in every session, but a price moving in pre-market or after hours doesn’t mean your order can fill then. Only orders with Extended Hours enabled can execute outside regular hours, and stop orders only trigger during regular hours.
Profit and loss calculations
Stake Wall St dashboards show Extended Hours pricing. Calculations for profits and losses are updated live during the two additional sessions as well as regular hours.
As share prices change during these sessions, the returns for stocks and overall holdings are affected. he day change shown for each stock covers the whole day: how far the price has moved since the previous regular-hours close at 4pm ET, including any pre-market and after-hours moves.
Say a stock closed at US$100 on Monday. If it’s trading at US$103 in Tuesday’s after-hours session, its day change shows +US$3 (+3%), whichever session the move happened in. Once after hours ends at 8pm ET, the day change holds the full day’s move until pre-market opens on the next trading day. Some platforms show regular hours and after hours as separate figures, so their day change can look different to Stake’s.
For each investor, the total return on this specific stock is also calculated in real time. This value is always there and can be good to look at before making any investment decisions.

The 1D chart shows the whole trading day as one continuous line, from the start of pre-market at 4am ET to the end of after hours at 8pm ET. The previous close is marked on the chart, so you can see where the day started.
To dig into a particular moment, press and drag along the chart in the app, or move your cursor across it on the web. The figure shows the change from the previous close to that point, labelled with the session it falls in. Drag into after hours and it splits in two: the move up to the regular close, and the after-hours move since. Together they add up to the day change.
