What was your first investment on Stake?
A boring dividend stock called Realty Income Corp.
In one sentence, define your investing style.
There are three criteria for anything I add to my Stake portfolio. Firstly, the stock has to be a potential category winner. Whatever its sector, the company should be the biggest and best, or have the potential to be. Moreover, a sticky customer base is important and finally, a high expected return.
Why are you in the market?
I love learning from the best in breed companies, how they operate, and it helps me think about how to grow companies in the future.
What’s in your Stake portfolio right now?
Tesla ($TSLA), Regeneron ($REGN), Amazon ($AMZN), Bristol-Myers Squibb ($BMY), Disney ($DIS), Twilio ($TWLO), Snowflake ($SNOW), Shopify ($SHOP) & Global X Lithium ETF ($LIT).
How are your returns so far?
The portfolio is up ~24% YoY. It’s my first year on Stake. My best performers are Tesla (up 100%), Shopify (up 30%), Global X Lithium ETF (up 27%) and Snowflake (up 20%)
Any other investments that are not on Stake?
I have some Bitcoin and an ASX portfolio.
What are you watching? Why?
Closely watching Zillow at the moment for three reasons:
- The millennial cohort is about to enter their house-buying age.
- Investors are underestimating their product led SEO strategy. Check their organic traffic, it’s way ahead of Opendoor and Redfin.
- The stock is still trading at the same multiple as when they were more like a lead gen marketing business for real estate agents (they are now moving into the entire real estate lifecycle).
Do you have a trading or investing role model?
Not a single role model, but I try to take the best bits from great investors like Stanley Druckenmiller, fund managers like Baillie Gifford and Buffett.
What’s a piece of advice you’d give a newbie?
Develop your own thesis on things, go try the product from the company if you can, watch customer reviews on YouTube, and manage your emotion by sizing the position according to your risk tolerance.
What’s one mistake you’ve made and what did you learn from it?
Not doing my own due diligence, hence why the answer above.
If you were to buy a US stock or ETF right now, what would you buy? Why?
Zillow for me. Great business, tons of engagement, and it seems like it’s trading at a reasonable price.
ICYMI: make your own decisions
This is not investment advice, just my opinion. It doesn’t reflect any opinions of Stake. I’m as fresh to this as the next person off the street. Do your own research and make your own decisions.
