FinFest Preshow: Elise Kennedy

2 min read

As FinFest’s major partner, Stake has early access to the program’s amazing speakers. To share that access with you, we’ve selected five of them and picked their brains before the event.

Our next FinFest Preshow features Elise Kennedy, VP Equity Research at Jarden – a leading investment and advisory group, catering to clients in Australia, New Zealand and around the world. Elise leads the Australian Research team covering Technology and Internet. She has worked in financial markets for over ten years, with the most recent seven years at Morgan Stanley covering the sectors of Telecommunication, Media, and Technology.

What’s your day to day like at your role?

Never a dull moment in the life of an equity analyst! We start each day with a 7:40am meeting. Before this time, I go through the overnight on my sector. The day consists of calling, meeting, eating or drinking with clients to discuss your stock views, writing research reports, speaking to company CEOs and industry experts, and attending to any company announcements or M&As that throw out your plans for the day.

What was your very first investment?

3D printing. A quick lesson on market hype, stock price volatility, and a product adoption/marketing concept by Geoffrey Moore called ‘Crossing the Chasm’ – which I find useful when evaluating early stage tech stocks.

What would you tell your younger investing self (other than stock picks)?

Have a go. Manage the downside of risks, but don’t let them stop you.

Can you sum up your personal investing style?

Conservative long-term structural high growers.

Name a stock you’re watching right now and why.

Xero (ASX: XRO). It has a large addressable market, low churn, a proven track record at building a customer base into new markets and, from a valuation standpoint, it’s nearly half its historical high of last year. It is not without risk, as its core market of SMEs will be hardest hit in any recessionary-like economic backdrop, but long term it’s one I have been positive on.

What will you talk about at FinFest?

Listed and unlisted tech stocks, venture capital, online media (e.g. Realestate.com, Domain, Carsales, SEEK).

Hear Elise speak at the CoinSpot Launch Pad, 10:50 am-11:15 am and 11:55 am-12:10 pm. Plus at the Stake Main Stage, 1:00 pm-1:25 pm.

FinFest will be held at The Cutaway, Barangaroo, Sydney, on Saturday 15 October 2022. We’ll see you there.
