FinFest Preshow: Bryce Leske

2 min read

As FinFest’s major partner, Stake has early access to the program’s amazing speakers. To share that access with you, we’ve selected five of them and picked their brains before the event.

In this FinFest Preshow, we talk to Bryce Leske, Co-founder at Equity Mates Media. Equity Mates was created to break down the world of investing, from beginning to dividend, to give everyday people the information, confidence and inspiration to start their own investing journeys.

What’s your day to day like in your role?

We’re scaling a startup so our days are hectic, but a lot of fun. I spend my days meeting with a lot of partners and stakeholders, recording podcasts and social content, building our team, and strategically thinking about the next major initiatives Equity Mates will pursue.

What was your very first investment?

When I had saved my first $500 I bought the IPO of Brickworks Investment Limited - ASX:BKI. It was something my dad recommended as a well-diversified listed investment company, with the lesson being to buy something that gives broad exposure to the market and pays a good dividend. Too bad I didn’t follow his advice early on, as I then started chasing 10-baggers! I still hold the stock today.

What would you tell your younger investing self (other than stock picks)?

Find a strategy and a way of buying things often, and stick to it. The power of dollar cost averaging into a mix of assets as early as possible is something I wish I’d really understood earlier.

Can you sum up your personal investing style?

Boring. I take a core vs. satellite approach, building a base of diversified index funds, then chasing a 10-bagger or two.

Name a stock you’re watching right now and why.

Right now I’m taking the opportunity to take positions in good quality companies; ones that are profitable and will be able to withstand the macro headwinds. Google, Microsoft and Macquarie, for example.

What will you talk about at FinFest?

We’re going to be dancing around the stages, hosting a variety of sessions with some of our experts. There are over 45 sessions, all designed for different levels of investing experience. I’m excited to host the Equity Mates Hot Seat quiz around midday.

Hear Bryce welcoming the crowd at the Stake Main Stage, 10:10 am.

FinFest will be held at The Cutaway, Barangaroo, Sydney, on Saturday 15 October 2022. Tickets are selling fast.
