I hold a long-term view of the markets and want to consistently add to my portfolio through a dollar-cost averaging strategy. I buy into companies I know and understand. I believe that if a company’s offering is integrated into my daily life then I’m able to better evaluate its position and potential. I’m still starting out on my investment journey, so I analyse macro societal trends and find companies that are meeting this change. For example, the shift into remote working has spiked the tech/ digital industry, and companies like DocuSign have reaped the benefits.

Why are you in the market?

After I started my full-time job last year, I started looking into different ways of making my money work harder (and smarter) for me. I started listening to podcasts like She’s On the Money, Equity Mates and My Millennial Property and wanted to get myself in the right mindset that would set me up for financial security. Other than the magic of compound interest and investing for the long term, I also like having ownership in a company or business I use and believe in every day.

What are a few positions in your portfolio right now?

Currently, I hold shares in Square (SQ), PayPal (PYPL) and Lululemon (LULU).

How are your returns so far?

I’m about +20% across my portfolio, but that’s mainly because I bought into Lululemon at its peak. A key mistake I learnt was buying too high out of emotion. I’ve always loved Lululemon and swear by their clothes, so when I had the chance to buy Lulu stocks, I couldn’t say no. This year, I watched as the stock surged almost 150% and even though I had analysed that the stock was overvalued at the point I purchased. Consider that my lesson learnt.

What are you keeping an eye on?

Right now I’m looking to diversify my risk by looking into ETFs. So I’ve got a few high on my watchlist at the moment, namely VOO and QQQ. Working in advertising I’m also looking into tech companies like Adobe (ADBE), Trade Desk (TTD), and Autodesk (ADSK) because I can see directly how these companies are changing the industry I work in.

Any prediction for a stock, industry or general markets?

I believe the upcoming US elections will add another level of volatility to the market, but time is the biggest advantage we can have against the stock market so at this point in time it doesn’t change my strategy too much.

ICYMI: make your own decisions

This is not investment advice, just my opinion. It doesn’t reflect any opinions of Stake. I’m as fresh to this as the next person off the street. Do your own research and make your own decisions.
